A Sydney Business Owner's Guide to Commercial Recycling

By Capital City Waste Services

Most Sydney business owners want to recycle more. The hard part is setting up a program that genuinely works rather than a row of colourful bins that all end up contaminated and sent to landfill anyway. This guide walks through the practical steps, from working out what you throw away to measuring how much you actually divert.

Start with a waste audit

You cannot improve what you have not measured. Before buying bins or changing anything, it helps to look at what your business is actually throwing away. A waste audit sorts a sample of your waste to show what is in it: how much is recyclable, how much recyclable material is leaking into general waste, and where the easy wins are.

For a lot of businesses the results are eye-opening. Cardboard and paper alone often make up a huge share of what is going to landfill, and capturing it as a separate stream can cut general waste costs straight away.

Choose the right streams to separate

You do not need a bin for every material. For most Sydney businesses, a few well-chosen streams capture the bulk of recyclable waste:

  • Cardboard and paper. Usually the biggest recyclable stream, especially for retail, hospitality, and offices. Keeping it separate produces a clean, valuable material.
  • Co-mingled recycling. Glass, plastics, cans, and liquid paperboard in one bin. This is the simplest option for staff kitchens and customer areas.
  • Glass. Worth separating on its own for bars, restaurants, and venues that go through a lot of bottles.
  • Organics. Food and garden waste, increasingly important as the NSW FOGO mandate rolls out.

The right mix depends on what your business produces. A cafe and a warehouse have very different waste profiles.

Make it easy for staff

The best-designed recycling program fails if it is hard to use. People are busy, and if the right bin is not obvious or convenient, material ends up in whatever is closest. A few things make a real difference:

  • Put bins where waste is created, not hidden in a back corner.
  • Use clear, visual signage that shows what goes in each bin.
  • Pair every recycling bin with a general waste bin, so there is always an easy choice for non-recyclables.

Tackle contamination head on

Contamination is the single biggest threat to commercial recycling. One bag of food waste in a recycling bin can spoil an entire load, which means your carefully separated material goes to landfill anyway. Keeping contamination low comes down to good signage, staff awareness, and feedback when things go wrong. A good provider will flag recurring contamination and, where needed, provide photographic evidence so you can address the source with your team.

Measure your diversion rate

Once your program is running, track how much you divert from landfill. Diversion reporting gives you hard numbers for sustainability targets, ESG reporting, and green building certifications, and it shows whether your changes are working. Knowing your numbers is the foundation of improving them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way for a small business to start recycling? A single co-mingled recycling bin for glass, plastics, cans, and paper, placed where staff and customers generate waste. From there you can add dedicated cardboard or organics as your volumes grow.

Why does contamination matter so much? Recycling is processed in bulk. A contaminated bin can cause a whole load to be rejected and sent to landfill, which wastes the effort everyone put into separating it.

How do I know if my recycling is actually being recycled? Ask your provider for diversion reporting. It tracks the volume of material sent to recycling versus landfill so you can see real outcomes rather than taking it on trust.
